I offer birth consultations and/or preparations in English and Russian (long-distance options available), and am willing to work as a doula in the Kiev area.
Skype: vitaliy27 (pls send request with explanation of purpose)
I served as a doula and childbirth educator for English and Russian speaking families in the Kiev area. I assisted families with both home births and hospital births.
However, after years of watching hospital births and growing in my own knowledge of birth, I no longer can serve couples making the hospital birth choice. Even in the best situations, I witness compromise after compromise. I became disheartened, cynical, and resentful. So I stopped all birth involvement.
Women do not need routine v*ginal exams or to be pressured to have their water broken during labor; they do not need to be told what to do, how to push, in what position to birth. They do not need to have strangers walking in and out of their birthing room, receiving their children into unknown hands; they do not need to have doctors rushing the pushing phase of labor, having their placenta forcefully removed, nor cutting the umbilical cord so quickly (1-5 min is quick). Fathers do not need to be marginalized. (And these are only the most “harmless” interventions I see regularly; there are more.)
It is too much for me to be watching all this over and over. On rare occasions, these interventions are needed, but in hospital births, these things are regular, with every birth, even in the best conditions I can find.
So, I am re-designing my service to couples to be more aligned with what is in my head and heart. I would now like to limit my birth involvement to couples who desire to birth at home with or without medical assistance.
If you are interested in a home birth with or without a midwife present (and I am NOT serving as a midwife–I am a doula, childbirth educator and midwifery student) or help with preparation for such a birth, please contact me if you desire such services. I provide information, answer questions, and am willing to teach you all I can.
My personal birth experience (we have four children) has been 2 home births with a midwife attending, a third home birth with only my husband (and a midwife we could call long-distance with questions), and the fourth with my husband without other assistance.
