Mother’s Hope

We’ve now had two phone calls regarding potential clients. We’re discussing this with our supervisor and seeing if we can raise some money to rent an apartment and start working with them to build a better life.

If this happens, we’ll start working on prenatal care and counseling.

Olya, my assistant director, was planning to leave for America at the end of this month, but that trip was delayed until the end of summer. I don’t think we could consider starting MH without her here.

Thanks for your prayers; we need wisdom and guidance.

I can hear!

OK, this is a strange post, but I am so amazed. . . . Almost two weeks ago, my right ear became suddenly, noticeably stopped up and hard to hear in. We read about it (ear wax clogs) on the internet, and started putting drops in and flushing it out, to mostly no avail.

I guess it’s not a huge deal, but it was adding stress to my life really, and i was about ready to visit a dr about it. Then tonight, i took a long, hot bath while reading aloud John 1-5 in Russian (so it was a really looooong bath). When i got out, i tried wiggling around the ear and finger-suctioning it. and I could hear! well almost. the plug didn’t come out and sometimes it would fall back into place. So right way, Vitaliy started flushing it out again with warm water. Soon a huge wax plug came out!

Then! i’d been noticing a little worse hearing on the other ear, so we did that one, too, while the wax was still soft from the hot bath. And an even HUGER wax plug came out of that ear!!!

oh. my. word. i think i have been half-deaf most of my life! i can hear everything now! my typing sounds like elephants trampling. pouring a cup of water sounds like a waterfall rushing. hearing vitaliy and myself talking is like we are using microphones.

I know it’s funny, but i do want to thank God. I was getting weary of this condition, and now He’s used it to give me better hearing than ever. And I want to thank Him for answering my prayers about getting the plug(s) to come out–one that i didn’t even know i had.

now for the gross part. i actually photographed the wax plugs that came out. Ok, I’m a midwife-wanna-be, so i can stand a little grossness. Hope you can too 😉

right plug on swab was fully plugging my right ear. the left plug, larger, was in the ear I could still hear "normally" in!

I heard recently the fact that there are more human slaves today than when William Wilberforce was fighting slavery in England. Two areas have specifically been brought to my attention:

1. Sexual trafficking of women and minors

2. Using child slaves for harvesting beans (chocolate and coffee)

if you want to read more, here are some sites:

Where to buy Fair Trade items

Project Rescue

Very sad, eye-opening article in the NYTimes

Abolish Human Trafficking blog

Stop the Traffik

Those are just a start. There is a lot of information on the Web. It’s made me stop and think twice about my latte and my chocolate bar. Maybe God wants you to be involved somehow–by boycotting, by advocating, by serving, by giving.

Leslie Ludy

I really, really am so challenged and changed by Leslie Ludy’s messages to young girls. Really, they apply to all of us. I would encourage you to listen to these downloads, and to spend time browsing her site her online magazine, and her husband’s sites, too.

You will be encouraged! Here’s a taste:

Noble, breathtaking, captivating, Christ-centered femininity is truly a sight to behold. It’s a beauty that does not draw attention to the woman, but to Jesus Christ. It’s a radiance that is not dependent upon age, circumstance, or physical enhancements. It’s a loveliness that flows from deep within – the refreshing beauty of Heaven, of a life transformed from the inside out by Jesus Christ.

Saturday afternoon, I taught a 4-hour class for 4 Christian couples planning to birth together soon. It was so fun! We covered the three phases of the dilation stage, the mother’s emotional signs, comfort measures and positions, and what the husband can do particularly.

We had a blast. We dimmed the lights, used lavendar scents, played music, practised massage, affirmations and encouragment, read Scripture, and tried various positions.

I’m teaching these classes as one of the final steps for fulfilling the requirements for Charis doula/childbirth educator certification.

I’ll be teaching the same class this Saturday for our expecting church couples.
